From the Barberton Herald, January 3, 2008:
The undefeated fall at Greynolds Classic
by Randy Broadwater, Herald Sports Writer
Four teams carried undefeated records into the third annual K. Jack Greynolds Classic held Friday and Saturday at Barberton High School, and all but one was tagged with its first loss. This year’s Classic featured teams from the Suburban League (Barberton, Copley, Revere, Green), the Portage Trail Conference (Norton), the Akron City Series (Firestone, Kenmore), the Principals Athletic League (Manchester), the Northeastern Buckeye Conference (Northwest), the Federal League (GlenOak, Jackson), the Northeastern Ohio Conference (Medina) and the Steel Valley Conference (Warren Harding), with schools ranging in size from Division I through IV. As it has been in the past, the match-ups were great ones, the games were well attended, and Barberton once again proved to be a great host, thanks in no small part to the efforts of Larry Bidlingmyer, his wife Marty, and the many volunteers, sponsors and partners who joined together to raise money for stroke prevention, education and awareness.

Coon leads Copley to win
It was the Indians vs. the Bees in Friday’s Classic opener, and it was the Bees getting stung as Copley took a 59-51 win over Medina. Behind three triples by Steven Hightower, Copley led 23-15 at the end of the first quarter before carrying a 38-30 lead into the locker room at the half. Medina would end the game with a 10-5 run, but it was too little, too late as Copley improved to 6-4 overall. Michael Coon, the son of Copley coach Steve Coon, won player of the game honors for Copley. Coon scored a game high 20 points, with seven coming in the fourth quarter. Senior Richard Sumlin took the honor for Medina with 13 points and a game high 13 rebounds. Medina fell to 3-5 with the loss.

Bulldogs bark louder than Bears
The theme of Suburban League superiority continued into game two as Green gave a great effort to take a 76-68 win over the Polar Bears of Jackson. There was little doubt who the player of the game would be for the Bulldogs as senior forward Matt Somogye played like a man possessed. Somogye led his team in scoring in each quarter, finishing with a career high 31 points while going 11-of-15 from the free-throw stripe. Somogye also pulled down a team high nine rebounds.
Sophomore forward Mark Henniger was the player of the game for Jackson, scoring 19 points and pulling down a game high 10 boards. With the win, Green improved to 4-5, while Jackson dropped to 5-4.

A quick exit for Jack Jr.
The closing game of the evening featured GlenOak, coached by Jack Greynolds Jr., against the Raiders of Warren Harding. It was a rough night for the Eagles, and especially for their coach. With 2:16 left in the opening quarter, and the score tied at 10, Greynolds would be hit with two rapid-fire technical fouls, forcing him to leave the game and sit out the next two according to Ohio High School Athletic Association rules.
The first technical came when Greynolds complained about a 5-second call. The second, when he said “What?” to another official when he couldn’t hear what the official said.
The general consensus at the scorer’s table was that it was like the old days when his father coached at Barberton.
GlenOak led 32-26 with just over five minutes left in the third, but the Raiders went on a 19-4 run that extended well into the fourth quarter. Warren Harding would outscore the Eagles 29-27 in the fourth to nail down the win, despite six Eagle three-pointers in the final eight minutes. Junior guard Sheldon Brogdon was the player of the game for the Raiders who improved to 8-0, while GlenOak, led by player of the game Storm Sanders dropped to 5-2 with the 71-59 loss.
Brogdon scored 20 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, while Sanders finished with 22.

Wadsworth snaps Norton win streak
Wadsworth and Norton tipped off Saturday’s action at the classic with the Grizzlies putting an end to the Panthers season opening six game winning streak. The Panthers started off on a tear, jumping out to an 8-2 lead. The grizzlies can put points on the board in a hurry though, and closed out the quarter with a 15-10 run behind a pair of three-pointers by Chad Baughman and Joe Goddard to trail by one heading into the second quarter. The second quarter was a series of runs as Norton’s Justin Emerick, Cody Howe and Tim Plouse put in eight straight points to open the period. Wadsworth would answer with eight straight points of its own with Goddard scoring four. The final two mutes of the half was all Norton as Brandon Farmer closed out the half with eight points during a 10-0 run that put the Panthers ahead 36-25 at halftime.
Wadsworth would come back to tie the score at 43 on a driving layup by Mitch White, but a short jumper and a put back by Howe, and a three-pointer by Emerick let the Panthers retain a 50-46 lead heading into the fourth quarter. That lead would disappear quickly as Wadsworth woke up like an angry grizzly in the fourth. The Grizzlies went on a 22-7 run with Baughman sinking three three-pointers. In a flash, Wadsworth led 68-57 midway through the final quarter. Wadsworth never trailed again, as Alan Sheppard made 10-of-11 free throws to help outscore Norton 28-20 in the fourth to nail down a 74-70 win.
Sheppard took player of the game honors for Wadsworth, finishing with a game high 24 points. Baughman finished with 21 with Anthony Schrock adding nine, Taylor Smith and Goddard seven each, and White two.
The player of the game for Norton was Justin Emerick with 20 points. Also landing in double figures for the Panthers was Howe with 17 points, and Farmer and Plouse with 11 each. Norton also received five points from Mike Plouse, four from Kevin Haramis and two from Bergstrom.

Weeks, Kessler lead Revere past Cardinals
Following the Norton-Wadsworth game that opened Saturday’s play (see separate story), the Revere Minutemen (6-5) made it four wins in a row for the Suburban League as they knocked off a strong Kenmore team, 59-56. Kenmore jumped out front 7-2 early and led 16-14 as the first quarter ended on three-pointers by the Cardinals’ Wesley Payne, and Revere’s Zack Weidrick. Revere pulled ahead 34-29 by halftime as Will Weeks, who finished with 21 points, and Rick Kessler, who finished with 20, led the charge. The game would be tied twice in the third quarter, but Revere held a four-point lead heading into the fourth. Kenmore would cut Revere’s lead to 55-54 after a pair of free throws by Payne following a Minuteman technical foul, but a layup by Kessler and a pair of free throws by Weeks would nail down the win.
Weeks would take player of the game honors for Revere, with five rebounds and three steals and a blocked shot to add to his stats, while Payne won the honor for Kenmore with 20 points and five rebounds. Kenmore fell to 5-4 with the loss.

Manchester knocks off Northwest
The Northwest Indians fell from the ranks of the undefeated with a 62-56 loss to neighboring Manchester in game six of the classic. Manchester, led by seven first quarter points by Bo Bennett, and Northwest, with six from senior Tyler Krzynowek, were knotted at 13 after eight minutes of play. Both teams would tack on nine points in the second quarter as the deadlock stood at 22 at the break. Junior Tim Pfeiffer caught fire for Manchester in the third quarter, scoring eight points, to help the Panthers pull ahead 36-31 heading into the fourth. In the final 1:35, the two teams combined to score 28 points, but it was Pfeiffer, sinking a pair of free throws with 12.9 remaining and Bennett, who split a pair at the 1.6 second mark, driving the final nails into Northwest’s coffin.
Pfeiffer paced the Panthers with 16 points with junior Kory Hull and Bennett each adding 12. Senior Kevin Nash finished with six points while converting six-of-eight from the free throw stripe in the fourth quarter. Krzynowek finished with a game high 19 points for Northwest, with senior Jim Shiplett also turning in an outstanding performance with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Falcons hand Magics first loss
2006
2005
The Classic ended with a classic game as Firestone and Barberton battled in a contest that was decided on overtime.
Junior forward Jacob Browning was almost too emotional to come out and accept his player of the game award for Barberton. It was a good thing he did though, because despite the 85-81 loss, he earned it. Browning turned in his second outstanding performance in a row, scoring a team high 23 points while grabbing a game high 12 rebounds. Browning kept the Magics in the game with his strong presence underneath the backboards both offensively, and defensively as he blocked three Firestone shots. Jacob Pope did the same for the Falcons, earning player of the game honors for Firestone with a game high 28 points and 11 rebounds.
Barberton led by 10 points after the first quarter and seemed to have things under control, leading 46-32 at halftime. It was a charged up Falcons team that came out in t6he third quarter though. The Falcons pecked away at the Barberton lead behind 10 points, mostly in the paint, by Pope. By the quarter’s end, the Magics lead had shrank from 15 points to just five. A layup by Firestone’s Will Baracato to open the fourth, cut into it even more. Barberton would stay out front with strong inside play with Kenny Calhoun finding Browning underneath, and then sinking a pair of free throws, but every Magics basket would be matched by Firestone. With 20 seconds left, the Falcons would tie the score at 72 on a driving layup by Will Carter from the left side. The Magics had a chance at the win with 1.1 seconds left, but a missed layup sent the game into overtime. The back and forth battle continued in the OT as Browning drove in for a bucket and then made the free throw after being fouled on the play. Firestone would then net two on a bucket by Ramel Mitchell, only to have Barberton jump out by three on a layup by North. The lead wouldn’t last as Pope nailed a three-pointer for the Falcons. With just over a minute and a half left, the Falcons went on a 6-0 run that gave them an 83-79 lead with 28 seconds remaining. Browning would drive in for his final two points of the game with 12.4 seconds left, but Mitchell would drop in a pair of free throws and teammate Devonta Hullum sealed the fate of the Magics with a steal a s the final seconds ticked off the clock.
Jacob North finished with 16 points for Barberton, with Calhoun adding eight, Steve Pitts seven, Darryle Duncan and Dan Goodwin six each, David Campbell five, Pete Hess two, and Clinton Hummel one. Mitchell added 22 points for Firestone and Carter 18.
